Tough Times: Food Bank Helps Needy Pets

Browse News

ATLANTA -- “Foreclosures on the rise” is no longer a shocking headline, but the fallout from this epidemic still is sending shock waves through communities nationwide.

Often when a family has to foreclose, pets are caught in the flurry of no finances or time to care for them. Unfortunately, this means pets are found abandoned, or in some cases dead, in empty houses. That's where Ann King comes in.

King had first-hand experience with this alarming trend when her own neighbors moved out and left behind a cat, which was only discovered nearly 30 days later.

After weeks of treating malnourishment and fleas, King was able to nurse the cat back to health and now the young feline lives with King and her family. From there, the Save Our Pets Food Bank was born.

With the help of friends, King created Pet Food Bins and called Atlanta-area stores for permission to place them in local groceries so customers could make food donations as they checked out.

“This has been a tremendous success,” said King. “And has also created awareness of the problem that many people were not aware of ... and now are volunteering to help.”

The goal is to collect food for families which can’t afford to feed their pet. Recently, Save Our Pets made its first pickup, and with the help of 250 people, 400 pets receive food.

“Some people rode the bus and brought their rolling suitcases. We stuffed as much in the suitcases as we could,” said King. “We have received donations from around the country. One lady from Kentucky sent us a Pet Smart gift card that we are using for pets that need special diet or prescription food that we do not get donated.”

Currently, the program has 10 volunteers that process requests. Yet, King hopes the Atlanta Food Bank will want to work in tandem.

So far, the group has received only a small amount of monetary donations, but that is not why they started this.

"The main goal was, and still is, to try and educate people to please not abandon their pets, most times they will die and will die a lonely painful death," said King. "There is help out there and we will do anything to help you avoid having to leave your pets behind."

"The phone calls, e-mails and tears streaming down peoples faces when they are picking up their food, talking about how grateful they are to be able to continue feeding their babies is all the thank you’s I could ever want."

The impact Save Our Pets is evident in a phone call King received a couple weeks ago from a woman who wanted to make donation on behalf of her niece, who had just died from cancer.

Now a memorial is being set up on the organization’s Web site.

As for the future, King says she doesn't see the food banks going away anytime soon, as “there will always be a need for food especially the way the economy is right now.”

While animals in Atlanta are happy are being fed one-by-one, pets in other cities are in need. King says she is more than happy to see Save Our Pets expand across the country and will work with anyone wanting to give needy pets food.

Our shelter gives away food to those who need it. We all should help our community in some way

Sad to say this article was written 4 months ago and things have only gotten worse. We support our local shelter; I wonder if they provide support to the community in need of food. Since it's in need itself, probably not.

I will have to make a point to ask our local food pantry if they accept pet supplies.

This is a wonderful idea, and one that could be utilized in every city of the country. I always add pet food and treats when I donate to our local food banks

Awesome philanthropy! I think more people need to do this because there are many people who can, in fact afford to do more than they do. Sometimes being so selfish, when yet there are others who really can't afford to help do and their acts of selflessness is stunning.

Something to keep in mind for the holidays. With the economy the way it is, people have a hard enough time feeding themselves. We cannot force them to relinquish their pets as a result. A can of food from everyone won't hurt those that can afford it.

My library has a food bank for cats. Wonderful. And the box is always full with new foods/toys/merchandise for cats. And! Instead of paying a fine for overdue books, one can donate to the kitty food bank. Thank you library. Thank you cat shelter for the food bank.

I love this concept. Perhaps the CEO's of Chrysler and Ford can make a pit stop when traveling in their private jets for $20,000 a trip and pick up a few cans of pet food for the people who have lost their jobs and homes. Wouldn't that be insightful?

At the shelter, we are constantly getting requests for help with dog and cat food. We are one of the poorer counties in Oklahoma, so the need is great here.

How wonderful that someone's thinking of the pets! Many families are facing tragedies right now from the economy, but pets are often the forgotten victims. It's not like they can just go out and get a job and buy food!

I agree...we often get animals at the shelter who have been left behind to fend for themselves...sometimes with tragic results. This is a wonderful program to help people keep their animals with them!

What a wonderful program this lady has created. She deserves and award. I wish her continued success. And please please please, people, don't leave your pets behind. Bring them to a shelter, take them to a friend, somewhere but please don't leave them abandoned in a home where they cannot be found.

I think this is a wonderful idea. Pets are so often left behind when a family falls apart or loses their home.

My first pet, 31 years ago, was a cat our neighbors left when they moved out in the middle of the night. While he was a wonderful cat, he would not have survived had we not been able to take him.

Kudos to King !!!! What a great way to give back. Enabling people to keep their pets, allows for some sense of stability in these poor families. To loose so much, jobs, homes and then your beloved pet.... I can't even imagine it... Atlanta is lucky to have King and the 10 volunteers.

What a great idea, we (meaning me) never think of the pets when collecting food for others. Why is that? We think of diapers and formula for infants, laundry and other cleaning supplies, but why have I never thought of the pets?

This is great that they are helping pet owners care for their animals. We are getting anywhere from 25 to 50 calls a day about people that want to bring their animals in, either due to home foreclosure or loss of job. We are at full capacity and I am a fan of any program that is helping these people keep their pets and handle the situation in a responsible way.

i think theres a lot of older people on fixed incomes that should be allowed to take advantage of this....too bad our food banks wont consider taking pet food or i would give to them...i now have nine cats that have been abandoned at my farm so i know how expensive it is.

This is great. Every city should have this. Sometimes shelters get overloaded with donations of animal food that could be donation to food banks also. Everyone should be able to experience the gift of loving an animal.

This is such a heartwarming story. I work in a petstore, and in the last couple months we are seeing more and more animals getting dropped off because their owners can't care for them anymore. I can just imagine what our area shelters are going through. It's good to know that this woman recognized the problem and is doing something about it. Bravo for saving many lives!

I agree it is a wonderful plan to help animals in need. It is hard enough to lose everything you have- to not be able to take care of your pet just adds to the awful situation. I do not think I would ever be able to leave a pet of mine abandoned in an empty house, you should make an attempt to get them in a foster home or to a rescue. Don't just leave them....
